Nuclear Power & The Environment

I have liked Patrick Moore for a while now. I think for an environmentalist he seems to have a pretty level head and realistic attitude towards how we should balance energy needs and protecting the environment.

Greenpeace founder now backs nuclear power
"Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore says there is no proof global warming is caused by humans, but it is likely enough that the world should turn to nuclear power...." more >>

There was an article on him in last weeks Newsweek. It was a great article and interesting to see the reasoning for his shift.

I worked for about a year at George Washington University on a risk assessment of nuclear power, which examined the safety of thirteen constituent factors such as technical feasibility, security vulnerability, system robustness, geological forecasting, etc. The study looked at current status and potentials to ameliorate the risks. Far and away the greatest threat from nuclear power generation was "human integrity" ... operator error, management incompetence, malfeasance, ineptitude, sloth, panic, that sort of thing. Interestingly, a few weeks before the report was released, Three Mile Island had its partial meltdown in March 1979. The massive release of radiation was due to human-integrity factors, as was the case at Chernobyl. Now that many people are again supporting power from nuclear fission, I just have to hope that we've solved those issues of human integrity:)
